單元概要
The aim of this module is to help Year 1 students at HSMC to acquire a basic understanding of university, general education and learning, to examine preliminarily the diverse nature and approaches of various academic disciplines and the inter-connectedness thereof, and to burgeon in students an intellectual ability of inter-disciplinary inquiries related to contemporary issues and challenges of the 21st century. Thus, students acquire a first taste of what the various academic disciplines are in three main categories and their inter-connectedness.
The format of this module is a combination of lectures, tutorials and a guided project on a contemporary issue from an interdisciplinary perspective. Faculty members and guest speakers in social sciences, humanities, and sciences are invited to deliver a number of lectures in their own field, followed by a dialogue between the speaker, students and the module coordinator. Tutorials aim to provide an opportunity for further discussion after lectures, and on selected issues of complexity that require an inter-disciplinary approach to a fuller understanding.
