4th GE Colloquium (2014/15): Global/ Asian Studies in Hong Kong: Challenges and Opportunities as an Inter-disciplinary Subject
Speaker: Dr Shen Xu Hui
Associate Professor & Director of Global Studies Programme, Director of Master of Global Political Economy Programme, Faculty of Social Science
The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Although Hong Kong is known as “Asia’s world city”, global / Asian studies as a standalone discipline is surprisingly under-developed in the academia. The identity of the subject is relatively unclear, as its inter-disciplinary nature is interpreted differently across institutes. However, when Hong Kong is desperately looking for new competitive edges within China, systemic development of global / Asian studies is definitely something that the special administrative region should explore. What are the structural challenges that the subject in Hong Kong are facing? How can they possibly be solved? What are the potential opportunities for the subject to prosper? Drawing on the speaker’s management experience in directing the Global Studies Programme and the Master of Global Political Economy Programme in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, as well as his service in the governing councils / advisory boards in various tertiary education institutes to institutionalise global studies, the seminar will try to address the aforementioned questions in hope of stimulating fellow colleagues to cultivate the academic virgin land together.
