Mr Gabriel Pang, Chairman of Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Association (HKDEA), Managing Director of Firedog Creative Company Ltd., and CTO of V360 Limited, was invited to share his valuable experience with students of the School of Communication at SCOM Talk Series #48 on 2 March 2023. With over 20 years of experience in the gaming and VR industry in Hong Kong, Mr Pang discussed the digital entertainment landscape and highlighted the efforts made by HKDEA, including events, to support the industry.
Mr Pang briefly introduced the various sectors of digital entertainment industry including gaming, animation & special effects and interactive design. He also advised students on the current opportunities and threats the industry is facing, including the reality that despite the vast market potential in the Mainland China, Hong Kong and foreign companies face significant obstacles when operating in the region due to cultural differences and policy limitations.
Mr. Pang also provided insight into the 31 year history of computer gaming development in Hong Kong by sharing his experience in collaborating with Japan’s Success Corporation to develop and operate his company’s XBOX and PS2 games, “Cupid Bistro”.
Students found the talk very insightful and gained a better understanding of the requirements for entering the fast-developing gaming industry. They also learned about the various forms of support available for those looking for possibilities for developing their own games or companies. They were very grateful to have learned from Mr Pang’s extensive experience.
