HSMC announced results of the 7th Junzi Corporation Survey and held its Forum on Ethical Entrepreneurship on 23 November 2017. Genuine perception of the general public towards business ethics of corporations in Hong Kong was gauged by a comprehensive and scientific survey while corporations with good business ethics were selected. At the forum, corporate leaders discussed business ethics and challenges which start-ups face.
The HSMC Hong Kong Business Ethics Index was recorded at 60.7 in 2017, lower than figures recorded in 2016 (62.2), 2015 (66.3) and 2014 (62.8). The accommodation and catering sectors saw a greater decline while higher scores were achieved by wholesale and retail, postal services and transportation sectors.
In his speech, President Simon Ho emphasised that the Junzi corporation criteria promoted by HSMC represent a comprehensive business ethics framework which incorporates the five virtues under the Confucian concepts, namely benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, wisdom and trust, as well as important Western business ethics on integrity and fair play. It is hoped that through this framework, corporate practices can be fully and accurately examined to see if they are in line with moral standards and social responsibility aspirations.
Dr Felix Tang, Co-chairperson of Executive Committee of Junzi Corporation Survey 2017 and Director of Research Institute for Business, pointed out that survey data were collected by HSMC students who were well-trained for this purpose. Through this exercise, students could apply what they had learnt into practice including survey design, data analysis and report writing. They became more aware of business ethics and the importance to corporations and the society.
Corporate leaders joined panel discussion at the forum, including Ms Jodie Cheung, Director of Simple Kitchen; Dr Alwin Wong, Director of Institute for Entrepreneurship, Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Mr Sunny Wong, Executive Director of Tibet Water Resources Limited and Adjunct Professor of HSMC; Mr Derren Lam, Operations Manager (Hong Kong), Didi Chuxing; and Mr Rex Lai, Director of CoCreation Group Limited.
