The insurance industry in Hong Kong grows rapidly and experiences a shortage of talents. A forum titled “The Future of Hong Kong’s Insurance Education Landscape” was held by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of HSMC on 29 Nov 2017, which brought together business leaders, industry experts and academics to share their thoughts and insights on the local insurance education.
President Simon S M Ho, in his welcoming remarks, introduced HSMC’s new Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Actuarial Studies and Insurance (BSC-AIN) programme which aims to nurture talents to fulfil the strong market need of insurance professionals in Hong Kong. He expressed sincere gratitude to Consolidated Marketing Group International Wealth Management Limited (CMG) for its donation of a million Hong Kong dollars to support the development of HSMC and BSC-AIN programme. The cheque presentation ceremony was held before the forum. Dr Patrick Poon, HSMC Governor and Chairman of Fundraising and Donation Committee; President Ho and Professor Lawrence Leung, Dean of the School of Decision Sciences received the donation cheque on behalf of HSMC.
In his opening remarks, Dr Patrick Poon emphasised his vision on insurance profession and he encouraged youngsters to learn more about insurance and actuarial concepts which are instrumental to the society’s development.
The forum has invited Mr Peter Tam, Chief Executive, Hong Kong Federation of Insurers and Mr Simon Lam, Executive Director, General Business, Insurance Authority, to share their views on the importance of insurance education in their keynote speeches.
Mr Patrick Chan, Deputy Chairman, The Hong Kong Confederation of Insurance Brokers; Mr Jimmy Poon, Chief Executive, Dah Sing Insurance Company (1976) Limited; Dr Teresa So, Chairman, International Association of Registered Financial Consultants, Hong Kong & Macau; and Ms Anita Yeung, Executive Director, Business Development, Regional Marketing, RGA Reinsurance Company, Hong Kong Branch discussed the development and needs of talents of Hong Kong insurance industry and also interacted with other guests of the forum in the panel discussion.
