The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) will confer honorary doctorates on four outstanding individuals on 13 March 2023 to recognise their remarkable accomplishments in their professional fields as well as their contributions to society and the University.
The four honoured recipients are: public administration scholar Professor Christopher Hood (Doctor of Social Science honoris causa), architect and business leader Mr Alexander Law Sau-wang (Doctor of Humanities honoris causa), Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited Mr Peter Wong Tung-shun (Doctor of Laws honoris causa), and former Chief Executive of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited Mr Francis Yuen Tin-fan (Doctor of Social Science honoris causa).
Professor Christopher Hood, CBE (Doctor of Social Science honoris causa)
Professor Christopher Hood is a renowned scholar with a strong international reputation in the fields of public administration and politics. He is currently an Emeritus Professor of Government and Fellow, All Souls College, University of Oxford, the UK.
With five decades of academic and teaching experience in political institutions, public administration and policy, alongside publishing 28 books and 120 refereed journal articles and book chapters, Professor Hood has taught at a variety of top-notch higher education institutions such as the London School of Economics and Political Science, as well as University of Glasgow.
His distinguished achievements as a pioneering researcher and teacher earned him a number of unique recognitions, including Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by the British Government, the 2021 John Gaus Award from the American Political Science Association, and an honorary doctoral degree from the Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Mr Alexander Law Sau-wang (Doctor of Humanities honoris causa)
Mr Alexander Law is a registered architect in Hong Kong, an art connoisseur, as well as a business leader. He is now the Chairman of Yu Tai Hing Company Limited, and the Director of Culture Technology Limited, which runs Culture Homes, a company devoted to elderly care services.
Mr Law obtained his bachelor’s degree in Architecture at Carleton University, Canada and obtained his executive master’s degree in Business Administration at City University of Hong Kong. He established the S.W. Law & Associates Architects & Development Consultants Ltd. in 1984. He specialises in the revitalisation of historical buildings and has completed more than 150 architectural projects including residential and commercial buildings in Hong Kong, Mainland China and the USA.
Over the years, Mr Law and his family have made huge donations to educational institutions and charity organisations in Hong Kong, Mainland China and overseas. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the School of Humanities and Social Science of HSUHK.
Mr Peter Wong Tung-shun, GBS, JP (Doctor of Laws honoris causa)
An internationally well-known banker, Mr Peter Wong is currently the Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, an MBA in Marketing and Finance and an MSc in Computer Science from the Indiana University, USA.
He joined the banking industry and has served at Citibank and Standard Chartered Bank, before becoming the first Chinese Chief Executive of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited.
Mr Wong’s contributions extend beyond his professional career. He is a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and he was Chairman of the Hong Kong Association of Banks, and The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce. He was awarded a Gold Bauhinia Star by the HKSAR Government. Mr Wong was a Director of Hang Seng School of Commerce (predecessor of HSUHK) from 2009 to 2010.
Mr Francis Yuen Tin-fan (Doctor of Social Science honoris causa)
An outstanding banking and finance elite, Mr Francis Yuen, the former Chief Executive of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited, is currently Chairman of Ortus Capital Management Limited, and an Independent Non-executive Deputy Chairman of Pacific Century Regional Developments Limited.
Mr Yuen received his bachelor’s degree in Economics from The University of Chicago in the USA. During his tenure as the Chief Executive of the Stock Exchange from 1988 to 1991, he led the standardisation and institutionalisation of the listing and regulation of companies and other major reforms, including the establishment of the Hong Kong Securities Clearing Company Limited.
Mr Yuen is a staunch supporter of education and is one of HSUHK’s major donors. Over the years, he has supported the long-term strategic development of HSUHK, and the South Campus was named the “Yuen Campus” in appreciation of his generous support. Mr Yuen is also an Adjunct Professor at HSUHK and serves as a Trustee at The University of Chicago and Fudan University, China.
