The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) held a two-day orientation event to welcome over 1,800 incoming first- and senior-year students. Themed “HSUnity – Wisdom”, the New Student Welcome Day kicked off the new academic year with “Unity” and “Wisdom” among all staff and fellow students.
Professor Jeanne Fu Ho-ying, the Vice-President (Learning and Student Experience), delivered an address at the Welcome Day where she discussed how staff and students are committed to supporting and uplifting each other, and that the nurturing environment of HSUHK fosters the growth of friendship and belongingness. She added that wisdom is like a house, for ones select the kind of disciplinary knowledge they pursue, just as they select what furniture they place in their home. She also elaborated on how HSUHK’s programmes and initiatives are designed to help students become an all-round people and live up to the University’s motto, “Erudition”.
Professor Simon S M Ho, President of HSUHK, encourages students in his message in the orientation booklet, that HSUHK is a community where all stakeholders are committed to supporting each other in learning and self-development to foster an academic environment where “wisdom” can flourish. HSUHK’s “Liberal + Professional” education model equips students with core transferable competencies, such as critical thinking, creativity, interpersonal communication/collaboration, caring attitudes, moral reasoning, and social responsibility, preparing students to tackle complex life and work challenges confidence and fulfilment.
Dr Cheung Pui-sze, Director of Student Affairs of HSUHK, wrote in the orientation booklet that the University serves as a diverse and inclusive intellectual community. Each community member appreciates every voice and celebrates diversity as a driving force for HSUHK’s collective growth. Dr Cheung hopes that students at HSUHK will achieve academic success and grow into wise, compassionate, and well-rounded individuals.
The New Students Welcome Day staged a sharing session on university life planning and learning opportunities, as well as thematic student performances. Additionally, freshmen had the chance to meet with senior student buddies, participate in games at the HSUnity Carnival, and attend academic counselling sessions to get involved and integrated into campus life at HSUHK.
