The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), Human Resources Office (HRO), and Office of Provost and Vice-President (Academic and Research) (PV/VPARO) organised the HSUHK Induction Programme for New Academic Staff. The two-day programme included two seminars held on 16 and 17 August 2023, to provide new teachers with a comprehensive overview of teaching and learning practices at HSUHK.
Dr Ben Cheng, Director of CTL, delivered welcome remarks and introduced the Senior Management team to new academic staff members. In the “Getting to Know Each Other” session that followed, School Deans introduced their Schools and extended a heartfelt welcome to new staff members.
Professor Jeanne Fu, Acting Vice-President (Learning and Student Experience); Professor Yer Van Hui, Provost and Vice-President (Academic and Research); and Dr Tom Fong, Vice-President (Organisational Development) provided an overview of teaching, research, student learning, and organisational development at HSUHK, by covering topics such as funding, support, performance assessment, management structure, support units and services, as well as campus wellness, among other topics. President Simon Ho also shared valuable insights on the latest developments at the University.
Co-facilitated by Dr George Ho, Associate Director (E-Learning), and Mr Matt Chan, Senior Systems Engineer (Virtual Reality Centre) from CTL, a seminar titled “Teaching and Learning with Emerging Technologies” highlighted the incorporation of emerging technologies in HSUHK’s curriculum and teaching approach. Dr Ho demonstrated the practical examples of various advanced e-Learning tools, while Mr Chan discussed how virtual reality, augmented reality, and related technologies enhance the overall teaching and learning experience. The seminar concluded with a visit to the Virtual Reality Centre.
On the second day of the Programme, new academic staff members attended a seminar titled “Beyond the Traditional Classroom: Exploring OBTL and Innovative Pedagogies” co-presented by Dr Holly Chung, Associate Director (Teaching and Learning Enhancement); Dr Victor Chan, Associate Director (Service-Learning) from CTL; Dr Amy Wang, Assistant Professor; and Dr Jack Wu, Associate Professor from the Department of Management and Department of Supply Chain and Information Management. The speakers emphasised the importance of Outcome-Based Teaching and Learning (OBTL) in today’s educational landscape and introduced practical applications of OBTL across various teaching disciplines that enhance students’ learning experiences.
The two-day Induction Programme not only welcomed new academic staff, but also equipped them with in-depth knowledge about the University’s latest developments, as well as its educational beliefs and values; ensuring that they have the insights and tools needed to contribute to HSUHK’s academic community and enhance learning experiences.
