HSUHK to confer Honorary University Fellowship on five distinguished persons

The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) will confer Honorary University Fellowships on five outstanding individuals to recognise their remarkable achievements in their professional fields, as well as their contributions to society and the University. The five recipients are: Ms Suzanne Chan Shet-hung, Mr Thomas Ching Wing-hong, Ms Tong Hing-min, Mr Tsang Wing-wah and Dr Yip Kit-chuen. The Honorary University Fellowship Conferment Ceremony will be held on 27 November 2024.

The biography of the five Honorary University Fellows are as follows:

Ms Suzanne Chan Shet-hung

Ms Suzanne Chan Shet-hung has had an extensive career in the fields of accounting and finance, marked by a significant and impactful vocation at Hang Seng Bank, which began in 1988. She served as Assistant General Manager and Deputy Chief Financial Officer at the Bank for 20 years, where she concentrated on financial control and performance enhancement.

Ms Chan made useful contributions to the Working Group for implementation of Basel Capital Accord in Hong Kong, demonstrating her profound understanding of global banking standards and regulations. She also actively shared her experience of risk management with new employees. Her expertise led to numerous invitations from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority for her to present training sessions organised by the People’s Bank of China and the China Banking Regulatory Commission, further solidifying her reputation in the banking and finance industry.

After retiring from Hang Seng Bank in 2008, Ms Chan was appointed as the Vice-Convenor of The Hang Seng School of Commerce Working Committee on Future Development to provide insights into infrastructure development, governance structures, and funding initiatives. As Council Member and Vice Chairperson of the institution’s Finance Committee for almost 10 years, she played an instrumental role in establishing a sustainable financial framework for the University, thereby ensuring its long-term economic stability and significantly enhancing the educational experiences for students.

Mr Thomas Ching Wing-hong

Mr Thomas Ching Wing-hong is a seasoned entrepreneur in the insurance industry, who founded Consolidated Marketing Group International Wealth Management Limited in 2005, a consulting firm specialising in providing insurance services to banking clients.

In 2013, Mr Ching embarked on a philanthropic journey, establishing the CMG International Charity Fund Limited, which supports various educational and health initiatives, including HSUHK’s entrance scholarships and student exchange programmes. Additionally, Mr Ching serves as a Director on the Global and Hong Kong Boards of the Fred Hollows Foundation, an international non-governmental organisation that has helped over 2.5 million people improve their vision in the past 30 years, contributing to the promotion of global eye health.

Mr Ching’s connection with HSUHK is particularly close, from donating scholarships to being appointed as a member of the University’s Fundraising and Donation Committee. He was also appointed as a Course Consultant, utilising his industry experience to provide advice on course planning, for the University’s first Master’s degree programme in Insurance. In 2022, Mr Ching further solidified his connection with the University by earning an Executive Master of Science in Insurance from HSUHK, becoming an alumnus with multiple identities, promoting higher education development and insurance talent cultivation.

Ms Tong Hing-min

Ms Tong Hing-min is a distinguished professional in human resources management with a 30-year career at Hang Seng Bank which began in 1974. She served in different positions with outstanding achievements.

In the early stages of her career at the bank, Ms Tong specialised in staff training and development. In 1996, she was appointed Head of Human Resources, a position she held until her retirement in 2007. Following her retirement, Ms Tong leveraged her experiences to make significant contributions to the higher education sector. Ms Tong has been closely associated with HSUHK, witnessing its remarkable evolution. From 2010 to 2021, she was a member of the School Management Committee. She also served as Chairperson and Founding Member of the University’s Human Resources Committee. Her strategic policies and advocacy for a robust performance evaluation system ensured regular staff recognition and attracted diverse talent. Ms Tong’s initiatives have established a solid foundation for HSUHK’s growth, ensuring that the achievements of its employees are celebrated and valued.

Ms Tong also served as a member of the Court of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and as an external member of the Human Resources Committee at CityU. In recognition of her passion for human resources management and her contributions to the local education sector, CityU conferred her the title of Honorary Fellowship for appreciating her outstanding work over the years.

Mr Tsang Wing-wah

Mr Tsang Wing-wah is a lawyer with expertise in commercial law. In 1971, he co-founded Messrs Yu, Tsang & Loong Solicitors and Notaries Public with several solicitors. Since his retirement in 2013, he serves as a consultant to the firm.

Mr Tsang is the son of the late Mr Tsang Shiu-tim. Following Mr Tsang Shiu-tim’s passing, the Tsang family honoured his legacy by establishing the “Tsang Shiu Tim Charitable Foundation”. Mr Tsang has served as the Director of the Foundation, playing a crucial role in promoting local education and social development, including the donation to support local universities, S.K.H Holy Trinity Church Tsang Shiu Tim Kindergarten, S.K.H. St. John’s Tsang Shiu Tim Primary School, S.K.H Tsang Shiu Tim Secondary School, and establishing The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation Tsang Shiu Tim Home for the Elderly.

Mr and Mrs Tsang collaborate with HSUHK to support the University’s campus development. Mr Tsang is also a Board member at the Fung Yiu King Evergreen College of HSUHK, where he maintains close relationships with various stakeholders and advises on enhancing the quality of life for boarding students.

Mr Tsang is also a co-founder with his secondary school classmates of “The Faith Hope Love Charitable Foundation Limited” which is dedicated to improving education services and relieving poverty in underdeveloped area of mainland China.

In recognition of Mr Tsang’s philanthropy efforts, Hong Kong Baptist University awarded him the title of Honorary University Fellowship to affirm his dedication to society.

Dr Yip Kit-chuen

Dr Yip Kit-chuen is a prominent and pioneering industrialist and entrepreneur, and the Founder and Chairman of G.E.W. Corporation Limited.

Dr Yip’s business flourished in the 1960s amid the booming electronics industry. Over the years, he has demonstrated exceptional market insight and foresight, driving continuous innovation within his business. The Welhome brand he established is well-regarded and beloved by customers. Dr Yip has always prioritised the development of young people, firmly believing that quality education is vital for empowering the next generation and fostering the prosperity of both China and Hong Kong. His commitment to education is remarkable through generous donations to various tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, including HSUHK. He has also made efforts to establish schools in mainland China, and has created numerous scholarships and improved educational infrastructure, ensuring students have the resources they need to thrive. Additionally, he served as an Adjunct Professor at HSUHK from 2018 to 2024, providing insights to motivate students in their pursuits.

Dr Yip’s philanthropic efforts have earned him widespread acclaim. In addition to being an Honorary Citizen in Dongguan City and Ningbo City, both The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and City University of Hong Kong have conferred upon Dr Yip the title of Fellow and Honorary Fellow, underscoring his exceptional contributions.
