The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) was deeply honoured to have received a magnanimous donation of HK$100 million from Dr Lee Shau Kee, GBM, in support of the University’s strategic development. The Naming Ceremony of “Lee Shau Kee Complex” was held on 3 Apr 2019. The ceremony was officiated by Dr Peter Lee, Vice Chairman of the Henderson Land Group; Mr Martin Lee, Vice Chairman of the Henderson Land Group and Mrs Cathy Lee; and Dr Colin Lam, Vice Chairman of the Henderson Land Group, together with Ms Louisa Cheang, Chairman of HSUHK Board of Governors; Dr Moses Cheng, HSUHK Council Chairman; Dr Patrick Poon, Chairman of HSUHK Fundraising and Donation Committee and Foundation Management Committee; and President Simon Ho. The officiating guests also officiated at the ceremony for the unveiling of the first bronze bust of Dr Lee Shau Kee in Hong Kong in recognition of Dr Lee’s contributions to the University and to education.
In her remarks, Ms Cheang expressed her sincere gratitude to Dr Lee for his tremendous support. She said, “Dr Lee Shau Kee’s generosity to us is not only a resounding affirmation of our University’s educational vision and endeavours, but is also an ideal driving force for our strategic development that spurs us on to achieve our educational goals. We are confident that HSUHK is well on course to nurture more future leaders for Hong Kong.”
Dr Lee Shau Kee is a pre-eminent entrepreneur and business magnate as well as a widely-acclaimed philanthropist dedicated to sponsoring education in both Hong Kong and the Mainland. In this connection he has made numerous donations to universities for the benefit of students and the community in Hong Kong. On behalf of Lee Shau Kee Foundation, Dr Peter Lee in his remarks said, “Artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, creating new positions in the employment market, transforming workplace norms, and reshaping the global economy at the same time. It is therefore important for education to keep pace with technological advancements. In this regard, I believe we all have shared responsibility for our society and our next generation. Over the years, HSUHK has gained a reputation for its innovative approach. I trust it will continue its endeavour to nurture the younger generation, equipping them with skills and knowledge necessary for embracing new opportunities in the bright new world.”
In his thank you remarks, President Simon Ho pointed out HSUHK’s aspiration to become a leading liberal-arts-oriented private university in the region. As a self-funded university, with the exception of government land grant and interest-free loans for constructing new campus buildings, HSUHK has relied on community support in the form of resource provision and donations. With Dr Lee’s donation, the University has gained further progress in its long-term strategic development. President Ho called for greater support from various sectors, so that the University could further contribute to the development of higher education in Hong Kong.
