A student team from HSUHK’s School of Decision Sciences has been selected as one of the top three finalists in the prestigious international EY Open Science Data Challenge 2024. The team includes three Year-3 students from the BSc (Hons) in Data Science and Business Intelligence programme: Chan Ka-fai, Sin King-hin, and Lau Ngai-sang.
They leveraged the YOLO model to analyse satellite images of coastal infrastructure affected by Hurricane Maria, and outperformed over 1,800 teams from institutions around the world to advance to the next stage of the competition in 8th place. In the second stage, they prepared a proposal to assess the coastal infrastructural damages, socioeconomic impact, and climate change risk for future storms, through which they advanced to the final stage as one of the top three finalists. The team will travel to Athens, Greece in July and present their proposal at the 2024 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium.
