HSMC held its Convocation for New Students 2018/19 on 6 Sep 2018. This year, over 1,400 new undergraduate students and exchange students joined HSMC. President Simon S M Ho led all Academic Board members and other academic staff to give a warm welcome to all new students.
In his address, President Ho hoped that students would not determine whether a person is successful simply by considering his/her academic achievement, income, wealth, fame or authority. Instead, it is important to differentiate between ‘success’ and the comparatively intangible ‘value’. President Ho pointed out, “Value emerges when something meaningful and satisfactory is done following one’s belief. At university, students can better understand themselves and learn to establish their own personal values through the learning process, which are essential when encountering future challenges at work and in daily life.” President Ho also encouraged students to take part in Residential Colleges activities, as well as internship and exchange programmes to find out their own interests and edges, to broaden their horizon and to enhance their learning experience.
Mr Li Cheung Kuk, President of HSMC Students’ Union, welcomed all new fellow students and wished them a fruitful university campus life. He also encouraged them to play an active role in different student organisations to make friends with different people and to explore their own interests.
Members of the College Sinfonietta performed a piece of music composed by Karl Jenkins. The event came to a close with melodious music and joyful atmosphere. Handa, the mascot of HSMC, met the students before and after the convocation for photo-taking and fun-filled interaction.
