The “Along with the President” Series #10: Hiking from The Peak to Kennedy Town was held on 13 Apr 2019 (Sat). President Simon S M Ho, 11 students and two colleagues from the PE Unit of Student Affairs Office started at the Exchange Square Bus Terminus, Central, where they took bus to The Peak to start the hike.
Upon arrival at The Peak, the team took a group photo at The Peak Tower, a famous architectural icon in Hong Kong. The team then walked along Lugard Road, which formed part of the Peak Circle Walk. Despite the misty weather with occasional outbreaks of drizzle, the team could still catch a glimpse of the vista of the Victoria Harbour and the city’s skyline along the road. The team then reached the intersection of Lugard and Harlech roads and arrived at a flatland with a pavilion.
After a short rest and some chitchat at the pavilion, the team was on the move again. They turned right onto Hatton Road, moved downhill slowly, passed a barbecue site until they reached the Pinewood Battery, the highest of all the coastal defence batteries in Hong Kong. Here, scars of the Battle of Hong Kong and military remnants could be clearly seen. After some rest and photo-taking, the team continued downward along the Lung Fu Shan Fitness Trail, overlooking Lung Fu Shan and the western harbour until finally arriving at Kennedy Town. The hike was concluded with a simple lunch hosted by President Ho at the Smithfield Market.
Throughout the journey, students shared with President Ho their university life experience and discussed issues such as career planning, language requirements, use of creative technology and impacts, and future development of HSUHK, which enhanced understandings between President Ho and students. Students expressed that they had a good time and were eager to join activities alike and interact closely with the President in the future.
