Module Description
This module is designed to help students gain a thorough understanding of political system of China. The module deals with the changing roles of ideology, the Communist Party of China, political leadership and political succession, the People's Liberation Army, state institutions (government, bureaucracy, and legal systems, etc.), politics of economic reforms, democratization and political participation, separatism and unification, and foreign relations.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. identify and analyze the structures and operational principles of the Chinese Communist Party, the Chinese government and the People's Liberation Army;


  2. pinpoint and comment on the complicated nature of China's transition away from the communist system;


  3. examine the concept of Greater China, specifically the tripartite relations between mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan; and


  4. discuss China's perception of the outside world and explicate its conduct of foreign relations, especially with the major powers.
