Module Description
This module is designed to strengthen students’ English language literacy skills, equipping them with effective reading and writing skills necessary for university studies. In the area of reading, the focus will be on developing effective reading strategies and synthesising information by paraphrasing and summarising. In the area of writing, the focus will be on the construction of coherent and grammatically correct essays and the development of a well-structured thesis with evidence. Students will be provided with opportunities to apply the language skills by getting engaged in reading and writing activities, communicative tasks, and group learning activities.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Comprehend, identify, and synthesise main ideas of written texts on both concrete and abstract topics from a variety of sources;
2. Plan and write well-structured and coherent essays with reference to a range of sources, establish their stance through well-developed thesis statements, and demonstrate control of language accuracy in writing;
3. Develop transferable skills that enable life-long learning in the areas of reading and writing.
