Scholars and leaders discuss social innovation and social impact

The “Economy of Goodness Conference”, organised by the Institute of Knowledge Exchange, The Centre for Management as a Liberal Arts at HSUHK, Economy of Goodness, and Master Insight Media, took place at HSUHK on 12 February 2025. The Conference brought together more than 50 leaders from various sectors to discuss social innovation and the measurement of social impact. Professor Simon Ho, President of HSUHK; Professor John Hoffmire, Associate Scholar at Regent’s Park College, University of Oxford; and Dr Her Rey-sheng, Associate Scholar at Harvard University and Deputy CEO of Tzu Chi Foundation delivered keynote addresses.

In his keynote address, President Ho emphasised the necessity for transformative capitalism that prioritises social responsibility and stakeholder engagement. Professor Hoffmire highlighted the importance of Impact Investing, which merges financial returns with positive social outcomes. Dr Her introduced the “Economy of Goodness” concept, advocating altruism in economic practices to combat global poverty.

The Conference concluded with a discussion moderated by Mr Man Cheuk-fei, publisher and CEO of Master Insight Media, during which participants explored educational and societal themes with the three keynote speakers. President Ho reaffirmed HSUHK’s commitment to liberal arts education, business ethics, and sustainability. Professor Hoffmire emphasised the significance of acknowledging that employees can care more effectively for their environment and customers, while Dr Her stressed Hong Kong’s unique role in bridging cultures and promoting sustainable development initiatives.
