Dr Patrick Poon talks about his learning journey and leadership style

Dr Patrick Poon, Governor and Chairman of the Fundraising and Donation Committee at HSUHK, was invited by the Centre for Teaching and Learning to speak at the fifth “My Learning Story” talk on 6 February 2025 on his lifelong learning journey and pathway to CEO leadership.

Dr Poon highlighted that the significant role teachers play in shaping students’ learning through their guidance and words. He encouraged students to discover and develop their personal interests, as this is key to ensuring their personal success. In sharing his leadership journey, Dr Poon talked about how he continues to learn from his staff and team members. He emphasised that leadership is not dictatorship; that leadership is about inspiring a collaborative spirit and providing support to team members to cultivate a harmonious company culture.

Dr Poon has over 40 years of experience in the insurance industry, and has served as the CEO of various multinational insurance companies. He is the first Hong Kong born citizen to obtain full actuarial professional qualifications from the Institute of Actuaries in the UK.
