Arts@HSUHK proudly presents The Past and Presence of Naamyum (Southern Sound) by Cantonese Opera Maestro Professor Yuen Siu Fai on 8 October 2024 (Tue) at 12:45 at the Auditorium.

Naamyum is a form of Cantonese narrative singing that originated in Guangdong and was commonly heard in restaurants, tea houses and certain houses of ill repute.  In 2021, Naamyum was inscribed onto the third batch of the list of the Representative Items of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage, and in 2017 onto the first Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong.

On 8 October, Professor Yuen and his artistic team will bring on campus Naamyum, introducing the art and its place in the Hong Kong culture with live demonstrations. The programme is presented by One Table Two Chairs Charitable Foundation.
