The HSUHK New Student Welcome Day 2023 was held on 15 August for Senior-Year Entrants, and on 24 August for Year-1 Entrants, with the theme of “HSUnity”, representing that all HSUHK members including staff students, will be with each other throughout their learning journey at HSUHK. Over 1,300 students and staff joined in the Welcome Day to look forward to a new and fruitful academic year!
The Welcome Day began with a welcome speech by the Acting Vice-President (Learning and Student Experience), Professor Jeanne Fu. Professor Fu used the metaphor of “a second home” to describe the bond between HSUHK and its students, and encouraged new students to explore their personal interests and passions, as well as celebrate diversity and promote inclusion to cultivate the mental strength needed in facing adversity. Professor Fu also encouraged students to be open-minded and proactive, and to participate in various campus life experiences alongside learning opportunities, to ensure that their journey at HSUHK is colourful.
Dr Tom Fong, Vice-President (Organisational Development), then introduced the University’s senior management members to students. With the help of two senior students, Syreni (Convergent Media and Communication Technology, Year 4) and Anson [Bachelor of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (Honours) in Social Sciences (PPE), Year 3], Lin Chor, Acting Director of Student Affairs, conducted a sharing session on University life planning. Syreni encouraged new students to earnestly experience campus life and discover what they truly want to do at the University. Anson, who is the Founding Chairman of the Students’ Association of Philosophy, Politics and Economics at HSUHK, encouraged new students to expand their social networks, enhance their interpersonal skills, and foster positive relationships with peers and mentors to create a better future.
Lead by Campus Life Mentors, new students participated in a series of activities which helped them understand HSUHK better and build their social network through fun activities such as the Campus Life Carnival, the Student Life Fair and Photo-taking Booth, which will also serve as some of their first memories as part of the HSUHK family.
Additionally, different offices and units of HSUHK have arranged a range of thematic activities for new students that will go on until October 2023. These activities include Academic Sessions, Student-led Orientation Activities and Extended Orientation Weeks, to facilitate new students’ adaptation to university life at HSUHK. Together, let’s make “HSUnity” a driving force in leading our new students forward in the days to come!
