26 January 2023
SEN, ASD, ADHD, PD were just some of the many important acronyms were decrypted at the Teaching Enhancement Seminar Series #2 on 26 January 2023. The series has been co-organised by the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Section, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), and the Student Affairs Office (Inclusive and Diversity).
Over 20 of our HSUHK teachers and administrators came together to better understand the challenges students and staff with diverse needs face, and how they can be better helped and supported in enjoying the best educational journey possible. Ms Josanna LAI, a registered clinical psychologist, Mr Ivan Lam, the Institute Manager of the Hong Kong Physically Handicapped and Able-Bodied (PHAB) Association, and Mr Andy Ko, the Institute Trainer of the same PHAB Association led the series and helped facilitate audience participation and learning.
With the aim to have HSUHK as a role model and leader among universities that promote “inclusiveness of disabilities” in the higher education sector in Hong Kong, this seminar walked participants through the characteristics of Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Mr Lam began the seminar by introducing the Hong Kong PHAB Association, which was established in 1972 to promote a pluralistic society. With over 20 years of clinical experience, Ms Lai then provided insight by sharing her experience in handling student cases in higher education institutes (HEI). Billed as the Regenerative Warrior himself, Mr Ko shared the story of his life in a wheelchair, and invited the participants to experience the challenges of physical disabilities and discuss suggestions and solutions to help build a barrier-free environment on our campus, and in our community as a whole.
