The Exhibition
The art of Chinese calligraphy is long-standing and condenses the essence of Chinese unique culture and visual arts, having both practical and artistic values which help nourish our humanistic spirits. From 1 to 21 Mar, Arts@HSUHK hosted The Art of Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition in collaboration with China-Hong Kong Calligraphy Association at G/F and M/F of the University’s Lee Quo Wei Academic Building, displaying over 20 pieces of master work from contemporary calligraphers. The exhibition was sponsored by Sin Wai Kin Chinese Culture Promotion Scheme.
“HSUHK advocates ‘Liberal + Professional’ education approach and is dedicated to students’ whole person development by focusing on nurturing their human caring attitudes and moral values. We consider the organisation of The Art of Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition helps reflect HSUHK’s value as a liberal-arts-oriented university, and we wish it would help enhance students’ spiritual developments and contribute to the inheritance and promotion of Chinese traditional culture and arts.” Professor Simon S M Ho, President of HSUHK, said in the opening ceremony on 1 Mar. It was also hoped that students would get spiritual enjoyment and enhancement in the exhibition through appreciating the art of calligraphy in a Chinese cultural ambience.
Beyond the exhibition which had invited more than 10 calligraphers and displayed over 20 calligraphic works, the programme would also include a workshop at HSUHK and subsidy a HSUHK student exchange tour to China’s Shanxi and Xian provinces, said Professor Yeung Lik-man, Dean of China-Hong Kong Calligraphy Association.
The officiating guests of the opening ceremony of The Art of Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition included Professor Simon S M Ho, President of HSUHK, Professor Gilbert Fong Chee Fun, Provost, Dr David Sin Wai Kin and Mrs Sin, Mr Li Jun-feng from the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong SAR, and Professor Yeung Lik-man, Dean of China-Hong Kong Calligraphy Association.
The Workshop
Furthermore, The Art of Chinese Calligraphy Workshop was held on 8 Mar. Three contemporary calligraphers, including Professor Yeung Lik-man, Mr Wang Quan-sheng and Mr Lin Qing-le, came to HSUHK to talk about the art of Chinese calligraphy and its relation to wellbeing. They also shared their experiences and guided the participants to enhance their calligraphy skills. HSUHK students and staff who attended the workshop experienced the joy of practising the art and were inspired to explore more about traditional Chinese arts.
