After establishing partnerships with National Taiwan University, National Taipei University, Shih Hsin University and Fu Jen Catholic University, a delegation led by President Simon S M Ho visited the following five leading universities in Central and Southern Taiwan from 21 to 25 Oct 2018 to enhance academic collaborations:
– National Changhua University of Education 國立彰化師範大學 (NCUE)
– CTBC Business School Tainan City 中信金融管理學院 (CTBC)
– I-Shou University 義守大學 (ISU)
– National Sun Yat-sen University 國立中山大學 (NSYSU)
– Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages 文藻外語大學 (WZU)
The delegation was joined by the following faculty members:
– Professor Scarlet Tso, Associate Vice-President Scarlet Tso (Communications and Public Affairs) and
– Dean of the School of Communication
– Professor Bradley Barnes, Dean of the School of Business
– Professor K K Tam, Dean of School of Humanities and Social Science
– Professor Lang Kao, Head of Department of Social Science and
– Director of the Centre for Greater China Studies
– Mr James Chang, Associate Dean of the School of Communication
– Dr Thomas Man, Programme Director of Master of Science in Entrepreneurial Management and
– Director of Wu Jieh Yee Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship
During the visit, in addition to its existing partner NCUE, HSMC and the other four universities have established strategic partnerships that will foster a deeper institutional engagement across all levels and broader international impacts. In-depth dialogues were conducted, particularly on aspects such as faculty and student exchange, innovation and entrepreneurship education, overseas internship and service learning, joint research initiatives, joint programmes and conferences, etc. In particular, areas in corporate sustainability, creative and cultural industry, creative media, teaching English language as a secondary language, and Asian studies were explored.
President Ho was invited by NCUE and CTBC respectively to deliver a public talk on “The Sole Social Responsibility of Business: Creating Value for Stakeholders” to their faculty members and students. Professor Bradley Barnes also had a research sharing with some professors of ISU on “Investigating International Marketing Relationship”.
Moreover, CTBC, ISU and WZU each signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HSMC to formalise the co-operation in various aspects. The MoU covers the arrangement of undergraduate exchanges, faculty exchanges and visits, the collaboration of research projects, conferences and seminars, as well as other academic collaborations. With the signing of MOUs, the co-operations between HSMC and the universities will be stepped up, and hence more deliverables and impacts.
For instance, recognising their common strengths in communication and creativity studies, the School of Communication of HSMC and the College of Communication and Design of ISU agreed to have active collaborations in teaching and learning as well as research. Professor Jyh-Rong Chou, Professor and Chairman, Department of Creative Product Design of ISU, invited faulty members and students of the School of Communication to visit ISU in the first quarter of 2019.
Furthermore, Professor Fu-Man Hsieh, Dean of the College of Culture and Educational Innovation of WZU, will lead a delegation to visit HSMC in November 2018. Active participation in collaboration between the two institutions will help HSMC faculty members and students leveraging on WZU’s resources and expertise in creative media, Southeastern Asian studies, and Southeastern Asian language teaching.
This visit would enable further development on academic co-operation and exchange with other distinguished Taiwanese universities.
