5 November 2015
Our heartfelt thanks to Mr David Fong who spoke at a professional talk for the Department of Supply Chain and Information Management on 5 November 2015. The topic of the seminar was “Investment Arbitration under the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’”. A moot court maritime arbitration was held, followed by the sharing of the trends in Investment Arbitration under possible disputes raised from increasing collaboration between investors and states along the Belt and Road countries.
Students who are taking the module “Carriage of Goods Law in Hong Kong and China” attended the talk and participated in the moot court. Mr Fong guided the students step-by-step through the whole arbitration process and shared his experience as a Barrister and Arbitrator. The case selected was a dispute between ship owner and charterer on freight charges settlement in vessel chartering. Students played the role of claimants, arbitrators and respondents. “Playing the role of arbitrator allows me to understand more the arbitration process and think about the arguments of both claimants and respondents. It is a great experience to take part in the moot court role play!” a student said after the talk. “It is interesting to master the arbitration tactics when practicing the arbitration,” another student commented. A group photo was taken at the end of the talk.
