Speaker: Mr Tse Kwun Tung
The School of Translation invited Mr Tse Kwun Tung, a seasoned individual translator for many multinational corporations, to give our freshmen a talk on how to study translation. Mr Tse is also the founder and compiler of several online dictionaries and thesauri.
Individual translators have to be flexible with different translation approaches in catering to clients’ business needs. Mr Tse demonstrated how social and cultural factors affect word choices in English and Chinese translation. He further highlighted the importance of precision and conciseness in English–Chinese Translation.
As reference tools are always great friends of translators, Mr Tse also recommended several online resources for gaining global exposure and some daily practices for language brush-up.
Mr Tse also shared with the students his view on the future development of translation. As technologies advance, computer-aided tools are widely used for attaining consistency in translation. In his final remark, Mr. Tse encouraged students to reach out to the world.
