6 October 2016
Virtual Reality has landed at HSMC. The Opening Ceremony of the Virtual Reality and Big Data Analytics Centre (VRBD Centre) cum Virtual Reality Forum was held on 6 October 2016 in the Fung Yiu King Hall and the VRBD Centre (A411) respectively.
The memorable event started with a welcoming speech by President Simon S M Ho, followed by an introduction on the establishment and future development of the VRBD Centre by Assistant Professor Eugene Wong. A Virtual Reality Forum “How Virtual Reality Impacts our Future Business and Daily Life” was then held. Thanks to Mr Philip Kong, Chief Operating Officer of Virtual Reality Technology Holdings Limited and Vice-President of 3Glasses, Dr Henry Lau, Associate Professor of The University of Hong Kong, and Professor Desmond Hui of HSMC, the forum was full of technological insights on virtual reality trends as well as in-depth social and ethical views. The VRBD Centre was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Guests, staff and students had a chance to experience the VR system – Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) and the VR Headset, in the Virtual Reality Experience Sessions.
The VRBD Centre has been established to enhance the development in teaching and research, with the support of a fully immersive and interactive visualisation system. This VR system provides vivid stereoscopic 3D view of scenes touching various disciplines, such as supply chain operations, geometrical theories, financial modelling, healthcare logistics operations, and cultural preservation. The facilities will enable students to learn in a multidimensional and more interactive way. The VR system and facilities are funded by the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government.
