HSMC College Orientation Day 2016
19 August 2016
Over 1,400 new students, senior year students, teaching and administrative staff participated in the College Orientation Day on 19 August 2016. Around 1,100 freshmen joined a variety of events and received important information of academic and campus life to kick-start their new college life.
In the welcoming session, President Simon S M Ho gave a warm welcome to the freshmen. The Officiating Guest, Provost Gilbert Fong, shared HSMC’s latest development and encouraged the freshmen to grab every opportunity during the course of study. Then, School sessions and Academic Programme sessions were arranged to introduce to freshmen essential information on their study and let them meet their professors, lecturers and fellow students.
In the afternoon session, the freshmen participated in different campus life activities with a focus of understanding HSMC, building connections, and featuring campus life. The activities included “HSMC’s Got Talent – Student Performance”, “My Life in HSMC – Mass Game”, “Campus Hunt and Student Life Fair”, and more. To assist freshmen to adapt to their HSMC journey, more than 100 senior year students, serving as Campus Life Mentors, joined the activities and took care of them throughout the day.
All in all, the College Orientation Day has been well-received by the participants. We would like to express our gratitude to Schools, Departments and Offices for their support to make the event successful. Special thanks to the Campus Life Mentors, programme officers and student organisations for their whole-hearted contribution. Once again, welcome new students to the HSMC family!
School of Business
The School of Business / BBA Programme Orientation was held at the College Hall. Dr Brossa Wong, Acting Dean and Director of BBA Programme, delivered a welcoming speech, and Dr Felix Tang, Associate Director of BBA Programme, briefed students on details of the BBA Programme and relevant College policies. The executive committee members of the Student Association of Business Administration presented their fabulous HSMC campus life with impressive performances and videos. Another great moment was the ice-breaking game between teaching staff and students which facilitated their interaction and networking.
School of Communication
The School of Communication welcomed the freshmen of the two programmes, Bachelor in Journalism and Communication (Honours) (BJC) and Bachelor of Arts (honours) in Convergent Media and Communication Technology (BA-CMCT). Dean Scarlet Tso gave a welcoming speech and encouraged students to develop a proactive learning attitude.
Dr Clio Wu and Dr Chan Chi Kit, Associate Programme Directors of BJC Programme, explained the academic and administrative regulations of the School.
After the School session, Associate Dean James Chang, BJC Programme Director, and Professor Trevor Siu, BA-CMCT Programme Director, elaborated on the programme structure, graduation and internship requirements of the two programmes respectively.
The Student Association of Journalism and Communication (SAJC) also shared on their college life and introduced the upcoming SAJC activities. The participants enthusiastically communicated with each other and the event was completed fruitfully.
School of Translation
The School of Translation held a lively session during the College’s Orientation Day. The School Dean and teaching staff greeted new students with encouraging words and warm support. Our graduates and senior students were also there to share their campus life experience and ‘useful tips’ with our freshmen. A good start before a busy year commencing on 1 September!
Department of Chinese
The Department of Chinese held its programme orientation at the Lee Quo Wei Academic Building. Dr Chen Hung To, Ivan, Associate Director of the Programme, gave a welcoming speech to all students on behalf of Professor Cheung Kwong Yue, Alex, Department Head and Director of the Programme. Teaching staff of the department introduced the respective modules they taught and the modes of teaching. The orientation provided a precious opportunity for students and teaching staff to get together. The department had also invited a group of Year 2 students to share their learning experience and life on campus, so as to familiarise freshmen with university life.
